WiFi and 4G Calling launches for Samsung S7 and S7 Edge

In April O2 launched Wifi & 4G Calling for O2 Pay with an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus.  From  Thursday 4 May customer’s with a Samsung S7 or S7 Edge will also be able to use this service.

To use the service, customers will need to have:
• A Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge that was bought directly from O2 or via a Direct Partner
• The latest software version installed on the device.

galaxy_s7What is WiFi & 4G Calling ?

WiFi & 4G Calling allows customers with suitable handsets to be able to make voice calls using Wifi or an O2 4G Calling enabled connection, rather than needing to use the legacy technology used on 2G and 3G networks to carry voice services.

You can use WiFi Calling wherever there’s WiFi coverage. They will also be able to use 4G Calling initially in Leeds, London and Slough. O2 are planning for 4G Calling to be available nationwide by the end of Q3 2017, wherever there is a 4G data service.

Calls come out of the tariff inclusive minute allowance or charged at normal Out of Bundle rates. There’s no extra data charge for 4G calls.

Important points:
You must have a  Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge that was bought directly from O2 (or via a Direct Partner)

The latest software version must be installed on the S7 or S7 Edge

Calls are included as part of a usual tariff allowance. Out of tariff calls are charged at standard rate.

Customers will be able to make and take calls on the London Underground using WiFi. More public places are being added all the time.

Calls on 4G should sound much better than standard 2G.
WiFi Calling will be available anywhere in the UK, 4G Calling will initially be available in London, Leeds and Slough but will be rolled out nationally by end of Q3.

WiFi and 4G Calling won’t work with some of the other O2 services, such as TU Go, O2 Just Call Me, Mobex, Best for Business or O2 Mobile Recording. Customers will need to remove these services if they want to use WiFi & 4G Calling. But don’t worry, if you change your mind you can always witch back!

Samsung S7 & S7 Edge set-up

Since 17 April, Samsung S7 and S7 Edge customers have been receiving a notification of a new software update. Once this update has been installed, their device will be WiFi & 4G Calling ready – but the options won’t yet appear in their Settings menu.

Unlike the Apple launch, O2 have not automatically migrated/provisioned existing Samsung customers to the IMS platform – Samsung customers, will need to make sure they are provisioned by calling in or by contacting their Digital Advisor or Business Partner (ADSI).

Once this is done, the menu options will appear in the Settings menu and can be switched on as follows:
• Settings > Connections > Wifi Calling > switch to On
• Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > 4G Calling > switch to On

Samsung S7 and S7 Edge customers will receive a text approx. a week after going live advising them that WiFi & 4G Calling services has launched on their handset and a link that takes them online to assist with set-up. The SMS will also act as a reminder for customers who haven’t yet updated their software.
