You only get charged when you need to use it, and if you’re getting close to your limit, O2 will send a text to let you know. So, there are no nasty surprises.

Last year my husband took his phone on holiday to just keep an eye on the business when he was away. Unbeknown to him his automatic email reply / response got stuck in a loop. Don’t quite know how this happened (user error- but he’d never admit that!), anyway when we received the bill last year in came in at £1261.42.  As you can imagine there were a few expletives!!! well maybe more than a few.
